If we have a low sense of self-worth, we may perceive that we are not as valuable as those around us. So, in order to feel more confident, happier, and better able to lead a full and fulfilling life, we are encouraged to raise our self-esteem.
If our self-esteem is excessive, we are likely experiencing “unearned” esteem and believe we are superior to those around us. This has a history of being connected to aggression, violence, and bullying of others.
Consequently, achieving a healthy level of self-esteem means developing a sense of worth independent of particular experiences or accomplishments.
